Martin Dowden was bewildered with Nedim Bajrami as he missed a golden chance to give Rangers a two-goal lead against Malmo.

Philippe Clement began his Europa League campaign in winning fashion in Sweden courtesy of goals from Bajrami and Ross McCausland on Thursday (26 September).

The Gers took a one-goal lead into the break but easily could have scored more with the visitors missing a hateful of chances in the first half.

One chance came into the path of Bajrami, who spurned his opportunity with Dowden left in disbelief as he covered the game for BBC Sport Scotland [26 September, 6:41pm].

The BBC broadcaster said: “How Rangers didn’t add a second goal here I’ll never get my head round. Vaclav Cerny’s chance when clean in was one he had to convert.

“Nedim Bajrami’s decision not to shoot when Cyriel Dessers played him in was inexplicable.

“For all that, Rangers have been very, very good. They’ve given Malmo nothing and should be further ahead.”

Nedim Bajrami can count himself lucky for Rangers

Had Malmo overturned the one-goal deficit in the second half, or even claimed victory against Rangers, all of Bajrami’s hard work securing the lead would have been clouded by his missed opportunity.

The 25-year-old was not the only culprit as Cerny failed to find the back of the net after rounding the goalkeeper and spurning his effort wide with Cyriel Dessers screaming for the cutback.

Clement has secured a massive win on the road in the Europa League and it’s exactly the statement of intent the supporters hoped to see from their side.

Many had ruled out a Light Blues win heading into the match, but this was no contest at all as the visitors dominated throughout the 90 minutes with the only negative take being they should have scored more.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding Ibrox and the domestic dominance of Celtic, European success should be at the forefront of Clement’s thinking when approaching the fixture schedule heading into the New Year at the very least.

Celtic have opened a five-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership, level on points with Aberdeen, who could also prove to be a stumbling block for domestic success this season.

Either way, Rangers have recorded a commanding win in Europe and Clement must now harness this momentum into the rest of the European schedule and salvage whatever remains of their domestic title hopes.
