Insider: Man United to make 'difficult' Luke Shaw transfer decision

Man United will have to make a “difficult” decision about Luke Shaw’s long-term future at Old Trafford, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at United during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the left-back’s lack of availability has made his future at the club uncertain.

This comes at a time when the left-wing-back position has been a cause for concern for Ruben Amorim and his coaches as they have struggled to fill the position.

Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia have both been trialled but have failed to impress so far.

Shaw, 29, made his long-awaited return from injury in November, playing 98 minutes across three games before being sidelined again after a blow in training.

Brown told Football Insider last month that the club have “not been honest” about the severity of Shaw’s injuries – suggesting it may be a result of the long-term affects of his double leg fracture in 2015.

However, as a result of his constant struggles, there is a growing feeling that the club may have to move him on and look to improve in the role.

His current contract at Old Trafford is set to run until 2027 – something Brown insists could be problematic as clubs are unlikely to push for his signature.

Brown previously told Football Insider that United are plotting to sign a new left-back as coaches have not been impressed with Tyrell Malacia, while Shaw’s injuries have ruled him out.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also spent time with the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham, has insisted that the club could part ways with Shaw to get his wages off the books.

“I keep coming back to this issue with Shaw,” he told Football Insider.

“They’re a far better team with him at left-back.

“But they know all about his injury situation and it’s gone on for far too long.

“So they’ve got to make a decision for the player, the club, and for England, about his future at Man United.

“They say it’s a half strain or a hamstring strain, but I’ve never seen a calf strain keep someone out for the amount of time he has been out for.

“But whatever the issue is, he’s not playing and he’s collecting a big wage which could be used to bring in a new player if they can get him off the books.

“It might be the best decision for them that they let him go, because we know they want to bring somebody else in in his position.

“It’s a difficult decision because everybody knows how good he can be when he’s fit.

“Then you’ve got the issue of finding a club who are willing to sign him knowing his history because it’s not like his contract is running out this season or anything.

“But if it becomes a possibility, I think they might have to move him on.”
