‘Interested’: Inter Milan star says Arsenal tried to sign him this summer

Arsenal and Liverpool were both in the market for new midfielders this summer.

Arsenal got their man in the shape of Mikel Merino, while Liverpool failed to sign Martin Zubimendi.

However, before the two clubs went for the two Real Sociedad stars, they were both chasing a Serie A star.

Indeed, via Di Marzio. Piotr Zielinski has now admitted that both Arsenal and Liverpool were interested in signing him this summer.

Zielinski was available on a free transfer after his Napoli contract expired at the end of last season, and while the two English giants came in for him, he decided to join Inter Milan instead.

Arsenal and Liverpool wanted Piotr Zielinski

Zielinski shared the array of interest that was shown in him this summer.

The midfielder says that Arsenal and Liverpool were keen on signing him, while Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were also interested.

Liverpool were strongly linked with Zielinski for years before his eventual Napoli departure.

” There were clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid interested in me, and I also received concrete requests from Barcelona . However, I love Italy: when I arrived at Napoli I immediately felt at ease, and for this reason it would have been difficult for me to move to England,” Zielinski said.

“I could have considered Spain, but my priority was to continue my career in Italy. Now I’m at Inter, but Napoli remains a great club and I would have been happy to extend my contract there.”

Zielinski stats against Arsenal this season

Zielinski could’ve joined Arsenal in the summer, but instead, he’s ended up facing off against Arsenal this season.

Indeed, Zielinski faced Arsenal in the Champions League earlier this month, and he put on a very decent display.

Inter ran out 1-0 winners that day, and Zielinski’s control of the midfield played a big part in that.

Arsenal’s midfield has been slightly disjointed this season. Declan Rice has been criticised for his performances, while Mikel Merino hasn’t quite got going as of yet.

Maybe Arsenal should’ve been a bit more forward in their efforts to sign Zielinski in the summer after their slow start to the season this term.
