Ibrox View: Rangers cannot afford cup final loss v Celtic as record numbers emerge

Rangers must throw everything at winning the Scottish League Cup to prevent falling behind Celtic in their all-time trophy list.

The Daily Record shared on 4 November that this season’s first chance of silverware for the Old Firm clubs presents Celtic with a chance to overtake the Gers’ overall trophy haul for the first time in 86 years.

The Old Firm have played against one another for 136 years and are currently locked on 118 major trophies apiece, giving the Gers an extra incentive to defeat their greatest rivals at Hampden next month.

Not only would a Bears victory see Philippe Clement’s side retain their League Cup crown, but it would also lay down a marker in the Premiership as they look to prevent Celtic from drawing level on 55 titles.

Rangers and Celtic face crucial weeks ahead in silverware race

Given what we’ve seen from the two clubs so far this season, even Light Blues fans will have Celtic as heavy favourites to lift the League Cup in just over five weeks at Hampden.

Celtic are unbeaten and have won 12 of the 13 domestic fixtures they’ve played so far this season, vanquishing second-placed Aberdeen 6-0 in their League Cup semi-final on 2 November.

Another big victory saw them thump Clement’s side 3-0 at Parkhead just four games into the campaign, and having come back to beat Motherwell on 3 November, another strong display is needed in the decider.

In fact, the Light Blues will be seen as rank outsiders to claim a 119th major trophy unless Celtic’s current form comes to a halt, but there would be nothing better for Gers fans than for them to start that slide.

Clement’s side may be a distant third in the title race following defeat to Aberdeen, but with two Old Firm games in quick succession, the Bears have been given a perfect opportunity to bridge the Glasgow gap.

In other Rangers news, two of Clement’s senior players were spotted ‘letting off steam’ during the semi-final win over Motherwell.
