Everton loanee Mason Holgate is set to miss West Brom’s encounter with Blackburn on Wednesday 23 October due to an injury picked up on international duty.
Since returning to West Brom after a successful loan spell in 2019, Holgate has failed to make an appearance for the Baggies, severely halting any progress Sean Dyche would have hoped the defender could have made.
Holgate has found himself out of favour under the former Burnley boss and his current loan spell will be his third, raising serious questions about his future on Merseyside.
In quotes reported by Birmingham Mail, West Brom boss Carlos Corberan said: “In his last game with the national team with Jamaica he felt something in the quad. It doesn’t look very serious, but from the day of the scan, it looks like he will be out for one week.
“Holgate is in the same situation as the previous game. He wants to put himself ready, but it would be a risk to increase an injury that is small, with no sense, so he will stay in the same situation.”
Does Mason Holgate have a future at Everton?
Despite having made over 100 appearances at Everton, going into his 10th year at the club, any future at the club looks dull for Holgate and his recent loan spells certainly haven’t done him any favours.
The defender spent last season on loan at then-Premier League side Sheffield United, making ten appearances but being unable to prevent the Blades from succumbing to relegation.
Now at West Brom, he has failed to make it onto the pitch since joining the Baggies and with the form of their current defensive partnership in Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley, it looks unlikely that he will break into the team any time soon.
Holgate finds himself at a crossroads this summer, with his contract at Everton set to expire and with Michael Keane, James Tarkwoski and Jarrad Branthwaite all above him in the pecking order, it seems unlikely that will be extended.
That, added to his £72,000 a week salary makes any future on Merseyside look unlikely.
In other Everton news, Jeff Stelling has hailed Everton defender Michael Keane for his goal in the 2-0 win against Ipswich Town.
