'It Looks Like Madness' - Stefan Borson stunned by confirmed Chelsea deal

Chelsea have likely given Cole Palmer an extension to his long-term contract to ensure they don’t lose him on a free transfer in the future.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the west London club are likely following an American sport strategy by handing their players long contracts, allowing them to dictate their future.

Chelsea confirmed on 13 August Palmer has signed a two-year extension to his contract after being handed improved terms.

The England international’s deal will now run until 2033 after he impressed in his first season at Stamford Bridge following his £42.5million move from Manchester City last summer.

Chelsea liability is ‘enormous’ after handing out long-term deals

Borson suggested the London giants’ decision to hand out such long contracts is “madness” due to the liability involved.

“You obviously want to secure your best assets and I think that is reasonable,” Borson told Football Insider.

“I suspect that Chelsea are following an American sport strategy, which typically involves very long contracts, and they believe that will give them the power to dictate what happens to their footballers.

“They won’t lose people on Bosman’s and they are not that concerned with the liability that goes with a long contract.

“Perhaps they also have clauses in those contracts that allow the club to terminate at certain times or in certain circumstances.

“On the face of it, it’s a unique approach, but I would say it looks like madness in a football sense.

“We all know that footballers are less predictable than American sportsmen and sportswomen.

“Therefore, you can end up in a situation as we have seen many times over the years, where you have a player on a very long contract that you simply can’t shift.

“The liability is enormous. With a financial head on, it seems strange to me.”
