'He Can't Buy Everton' - Stefan Borson drops Textor takeover verdict

John Textor will likely have to bring in third-party financing to buy Everton after being handed exclusivity to complete a takeover.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the American businessman doesn’t appear to have the resources to do a deal himself.

The Athletic reported on 15 August Textor has entered a period of exclusivity to buy Moshiri’s 94.1-per-cent stake at Goodison Park.

But one complication is the 58-year-old’s 45-per-cent stake in Crystal Palace, with Premier League rules forbidding ownership of two clubs in the same division.

The Merseyside giants have already seen two takeover bids collapse over the past few months, with 777 Partners and The Friedkin Group both failing to get a deal over the line.

Borson revealed Textor is unlikely to sell his Palace shares to the other owners at Selhurst Park due to the deal currently on offer.

He told Football Insider: “It does look like he needs to sell his Crystal Palace shares and selling them won’t be straightforward because there are loads of clubs available and it’s a minority interest.

“We know he could sell them to the other owners of Palace, but if we are to believe what we see in the press, it appears the amount they are prepared to pay is effectively what Textor originally paid for them.

“That doesn’t really give value for some of the progress Palace have made during that time, so I think he’s probably going to be unlikely to want to do that deal.

“If he can’t get rid of the Palace shares, then he can’t buy Everton.

“In any event, he doesn’t seem to have the resources to do the deal himself.

“It looks like he will have to bring in third-party financing to do the deal, so you would question how that is going to work anyway in the context of the complexity of Everton.

“But as always, we will have to see.”
