Manchester City star Rodri is the exception to most players in world football after he suggested a strike could be close following the increase in matches.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he doesn’t believe there will be a strike as most players don’t play as many games as the Spain international.
Speaking in a press conference before Man City’s Champions League game against Inter Milan last week, the 28-year-old said he believes players will have no option other than to strike if the amount of matches continues to increase.
The new Champions League and Club World Cup formats mean Pep Guardiola’s side will play at least four extra games compared to last season’s guaranteed fixtures.
But Football Insider revealed on 24 September Rodri could now miss the remainder of this season as he prepares to undergo further tests following the knee injury he picked up against Arsenal.
Man City to play more games than other teams after fixture increase
Borson insisted the increase in games is a real issue and all the parties can do more to resolve it.
“I think it’s unlikely there is going to be a strike,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I think Rodri was talking about really a very small number of players that have the issues that City players have.
“For example, part of the reason it’s such a big issue for City and Chelsea players is because of the Club World Cup.
“But clearly, most clubs don’t have the Club World Cup issue straight away, so that will remove most clubs.
“Most clubs are not going to get to the latter stages of the Champions League, so you can remove that from most players.
“The vast majority of players around the game are not having seasons with 60, 70, 80 games. It’s an issue for the elite players, so I very much doubt there is going to be a strike.
“Rodri is almost the exception. There are very few players that are playing the number of games Rodri has been playing because he’s at the pinnacle of his career.
“He’s been playing in multiple competitions and he’s also been playing in international competitions through to the end, but that’s not normal.
“A normal player will not play that many games over a season. There are lots of Premier League clubs that will just not have these issues.
“There won’t be a strike I don’t think.
“The issue is real, but I think there are more things the parties can do to control the issue rather than just holding their hands up and saying ‘There is nothing we can do’.”
