'It's Good News' - Pundit relieved as Clement chases 'exactly what Rangers need' signing

Thomas Galdames must have everything Philippe Clement is looking for if Rangers are interested in signing him this summer, says Derek Ferguson.

The ex-Ibrox midfielder is glad the Light Blues are looking to address the defence during the transfer window because the unit is “not working” in it’s current iteration.

As the club abruptly pulled out of a move for Levski Sofia’s Jose Cordoba [Rangers Review, 29 May] it emerged that they were instead tracking Chilean Galdames from Godoy Cruz, with the 25-year-old said to already be finalising an international transfer away from the club [Juan Esteban Suraci, 28 May].

Ferguson is pleased that Clement is working to bring in new recruits to address the deficiencies at the back.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “It’s good news that they’re looking to bring new faces in because that’s exactly what Rangers need.

“As a group it’s just not working. As a group they’ve certainly not got the edge over Celtic.

“So new faces need to come in. I don’t know too much about the boy but I’m sure if Rangers have been tracking him for a period of time he must have everything the manager’s looking for.”

Rangers Jose Cordoba
Rangers had been after Jose Cordoba before pursuing the Thomas Galdames move.

Rangers move on quickly from failed Jose Cordoba move

Galdames can play as a left-back or centrally and if Clement’s first season at Ibrox has taught him anything it is that he can never have enough cover for both positions.

Borna Barisic is gone and speculation has followed Ridvan Yilmaz for the duration of his Rangers career, so despite the confirmed acquisition of Jefte on the left it would be no huge shock to see another man at the position arrive.

Re-signing arguably the most dependable centre-back in near-36-year-old Leon Balogun is an indicator of the uncertainty in the middle, with current options possibly leaving this summer, so if the Light Blues can ensure they are Galdames’ next destination it could help kill two birds with one stone.

In other Rangers news, the club could lose as many as four players at the same position this summer with yet another exit now mooted.
