Jamie Carragher has suggested Manchester United may struggle to sell Marcus Rashford because of his huge wages.

Rashford was brutally cut from the squad by head coach Ruben Amorim on Sunday as United produced a brilliant 2-1 victory at Manchester City.

He was left out of the squad for a number of reasons relating to training, attitude and his general behaviour at the club.

Rashford earns £300,000 per week at Old Trafford – plus a potential extra £75,000 in bonuses – making him one of United’s highest-paid players.

Liverpool legend Carragher, who now works as a football pundit for Sky Sports, feels it could be a stumbling block if United wish to offload him.

Quizzed about Amorim’s decision to omit Rashford for the Manchester derby, Carragher said on Monday Night Football: ‘I think in some ways, it feels a bigger decision than it actually is.

‘I mean, is Marcus Rashford in the best XI? Really? How good is he? We’re not talking about a world-class superstar here.

‘I actually think we talk about Marcus Rashford too much, to be honest. He’s a good player – not a great player. It is time for him to leave the club. Whether there will be any takers with the wages the lad is on, who knows.’

Rashford, 27, is currently under contract at United until the summer of 2028.

‘I think a parting of ways is inevitable at some stage,’ Carragher added. ‘For Manchester United and Marcus Rashford, the quicker that comes the better.’

Rashford has registered just four goals and one assist in 15 Premier League games so far this season.

Last term, Rashford scored only seven goals across 33 matches in the top-flight.

His form across the last two campaigns is a significant drop off from the 2022-23 season, when he conjured up 17 goals and five assists in 35 Premier League games.
