Here’s everything you need to know about Scottish presenter Cates before she joins MOTD…
Broadcasting career so far
Cates first job came with Channel 4, presenting the news on ‘The Biggest Breakfast Ever’ – an eight-hour, Millennium special of The Big Breakfast.
Her big break came when she joined Sky Sports News as a presenter, while also working in the same role for Virgin Media and Setanta Sports.
That raised her profile with Cates then getting work with ESPN, ITV, STV and Channel 5 in various presenting and journalistic jobs.
In 2016, Sky Sports announced Cates had rejoined them to present their live coverage of the English Football League (EFL).
Just one year later, though, she was promoted to present Premier League matches and has remained in that role ever since.
Kelly Cates’ dating history
Cates married her husband Tom Cates in 2017 – but they separated in 2021 after having two daughters together.
The Scot has started dating again since the split, although it is unknown if she currently has a boyfriend or partner.
She has previously opened up about her love life on Gabby Logan’s Mid Point podcast.
‘I don’t have a picture in my head of why a middle-aged, slightly overweight mother of two could possibly be attractive,’ Cates said.
”I can’t get my head round that. It’s not that I’m putting myself down and it’s not a lack of confidence or a low self-esteem. It’s just I don’t know what that would look like.’
Kelly Cates’ relationship with dad Kenny Dalglish
Kelly is the eldest of four children of legendary Liverpool figure Sir Kenny Dalglish.
Her dad scored 170 goals and provided 186 assists in 511 appearances for Liverpool – winning six First Division titles, four League Cups, an FA Cup and a European Super Cup – and managed the club twice.
‘When I was the manager’s daughter, I was not encouraged to hang around footballers; quite the opposite,’ Cates has said about her father.
‘I was like 13 or 14 and then a bit older. It was, ‘you come into the office, you stand with us and stay clear of everybody’. It wasn’t really a mingling opportunity.
‘My first experience of footballers were my mum and dad’s friends. I would see the wives and kids as much as I would see the footballers. When it’s your dad’s workmates they’re not really that interesting. That’s kind of how I first saw footballers.’
Kelly Cates’ net worth
Cates has an estimated net worth of around £7.9million, according to various reports.
The 49-year-old is said to have worked on brand deals and investments over the years to help her earnings soar.
