Napoli are being defended by Italian journalist Paolo Esposito for the deal that’s seen Jesper Lindstrom sign for Everton.
Lindstrom, 24, joined the Blues last week on a season-long loan. The Merseyside club have the option to then buy him permanently next summer.
Esposito has taken aim at Napoli’s critics, who are claiming that Lindstrom is representing a loss for them after arriving from Frankfurt just one year ago.
“More than one joker is going around saying that Neapolitans would rejoice over an Osimhen-Lukaku swap. No, they are very wrong. Neapolitans would rejoice if Osimhen stayed, who has already helped them win a sensational Scudetto, detaching and crushing Inter, Juventus and Milan just 13 months ago. June 2023,” Esposito said, as quoted by ArenaNapoli.
“Some other joker has already pronounced from the height of his hatred for the club, that Napoli has had a bloodbath with Lindstrom. They are also getting the price of the young and talented Dane wrong, Napoli did not pay €30million (£25.2m), as some joker always says, but €25million (£21m), not one cent more.
“Now they have loaned him to Everton for a fee of €3million (£2.5m), with another €22million (£18.5m) to buy and therefore, Napoli would recover its entire investment of €25million (£21m) and also with a year’s amortization.
“So, no bloodbath. If some individuals were well informed and not just by hearsay, so many stupid things would not be written!”
Napoli clearly not in best shape as Everton continue to strengthen
It’s pretty obvious that either the fans or media around Naples aren’t too happy with the club’s business lately.
Lindstrom joined them from Frankfurt last year and only managed 29 appearances across all competitions last season. The versatile Denmark midfielder started just two times in Serie A with the bulk of his appearances coming as a substitute in stoppage time.
It’s no wonder that Neopolitans aren’t too pleased with the signing of him but they should be pretty happy that they have the chance to make back all of their money if Everton sign him permanently next year.
There’s a bit of a risk involved in every transfer and Evertonians will have looked at Lindstrom’s stats from last season and been a bit worried.
However, his form in the Bundesliga was solid prior to his move to Italy and it’s that form that people should pay more attention to due to the similarities in play between the Premier League and Germany’s top flight.
Lindstrom isn’t guaranteed to be a success but we’d back him to do better at Goodison Park than he did in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.
