Journalist shares Steve McMahon joke over Everton after Liverpool postponement

Steve McMahon joked that thousands of Everton matchday programmes would “end up in the bins” ahead of the Liverpool postponement, Mike Keegan says.

The former Blues midfielder, who also played for the Reds, agreed to do the played-for-both-sides feature ahead of the Merseyside derby on 7 December — which was eventually cancelled due to Storm Darragh.

Goodison was set to host its final Merseyside derby in the Premier League — which could now be a night game — ahead of the Toffees moving to Bramley-Moore Dock at the start of next season.

Keegan wrote in his Daily Mail newspaper column [9 December, pg 59]: “Steve McMahon joked that 30,000 copies of Everton’s Merseyside derby programme would ‘end up in the bins’ after he agreed to the ‘played-for-both-sides feature’ ahead of Saturday’s scheduled match.

“McMahon isn’t the most popular figure among Evertonians after he defected to Liverpool — via Aston Villa — in the mid-1980s when the two clubs went toe to toe at the summit of English football. Decades on, the move still rankles some.

“As things turned out, McMahon — a boyhood Everton fan who became the club’s youngest ever captain — wasn’t far wrong about the destiny of those programmes, with the game a victim of Storm Darragh.”

Everton have challenging month after Liverpool cancellation

Considering the packed December schedule both teams already have, it will be interesting to see when the derby will take place.

Sean Dyche doesn’t have much time to rest, with a trip to the Emirates and Arsenal next on 14 December, followed by Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Blues are in a precarious situation at the moment, and despite being five points ahead of the relegation zone, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them lose their next three games.

Everton have once again found themselves in a tough spot with Dyche in charge, and the English head coach could soon be out of a job if things don’t improve.

The 4-0 win over Wolves on 4 December bought the 53-year-old some time, but it remains to be seen what Dan Friedkin will do once he takes over the Blues from Farhad Moshiri.

Goodison Park doesn’t deserve to see the Toffees go down to the Championship in its final campaign, and supporters will hope that The Friedkin Group can usher in a new era at the Merseyside outfit.
