Roger Hannah has suggested Philippe Clement will be relieved after recent Connor Barron developments away from Rangers.
The midfielder, who has been a regular under the Belgian at Ibrox this season, has been called up to Steve Clarke’s first-team squad from the Under-21s for their clash with Portugal on Tuesday (15 October).
Although Scottish Sun journalist Hannah insists Clement will be desperate to see Barron return injury-free, he believes he will be breathing a sigh of relief now that the midfielder doesn’t have to travel out of Scotland with the Under-21s.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (14 October) he said: “I think Philippe Clement’s immediate thoughts would have been thank goodness Connor Barron is not going to Kazakhstan with the Under-21s.
“At least he’s only going to Hampden. He’s edging towards a regular player, that’s a couple of Scotland camps now he’s been in the senior squad and that won’t do him any harm at all.
“Philippe Clement will just want to see them walking back through the front door in good physical knick to go to Kilmarnock.”
What has happened to Rangers ace Connor Barron at Ibrox?
While there is still a chance Barron may not make it through the international break without picking up an injury, you’d imagine he will be safer in the confines of Hampden than he would be away in Kazakstan.
If nothing else, the extra travel would have been tough for the midfielder to deal with ahead of the weekend’s trip to Rugby Park. That game isn’t going to be easy and Clement will need everyone at their best.
Whether or not Barron will return to the starting XI after the international break remains to be seen. He was left out against St Johnstone last time out, with Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande preferred together.
The former Aberdeen man has been excellent in his first season at Ibrox, but he is still young and there is a lot of expectation on his shoulders. Whether or not that is a good thing, only time will tell in the long run.
In other Rangers news, Clement has been told that he is facing a “season-defining month” at Ibrox after new developments
