Journo backs 'Undervalued' Everton int'l ace to show how good he is today

Andy Dunn has backed Everton ace Jordan Pickford to show his quality when England take on Serbia on Sunday (16 June).

Writing via the Daily Mirror (page 71, 16 June), Dunn has piled praise on the Toffees’ shot-stopper, who has not always received the same sort of recognition away from Goodison Park as he has from the Everton faithful.

Dunn wrote: “If there is one player in Gareth Southgate’s squad who is consistently undervalued, it is Jordan Pickford.

“In fact, outside Everton’s support, few acknowledge exactly how good Pickford is. Yes, he has been prone to the odd rush of blood, but don’t forget that, at 30, he is still maturing as a keeper.

“And, with so many doubts surrounding the England defence at Euro 2024, we are about to see just how good Pickford can be.”

Pickford has been the Three Lions’ undisputed number one for years now.

And during that time it is hard to think of many instances where the goalkeeper has let his country down. Pickford has always been someone England could rely on, and he has the chance to make himself a national hero in Germany.

He almost earned that status during the Euro 2020 final as he saved two of Italy’s penalties in the shootout, but it wasn’t to be for England that night.

And with question marks around the defenders playing in front of him, Pickford has another chance to be the hero for England at the Euros this year.

However, he will need to be at his absolute best if Southgate’s side are to end their 58-year wait for a major trophy.

He had a good season with Everton and arrives at the Euros in good form.

Now, it is about staying switched on and proving to everybody just how good he can be.
