Jonathan Fadugba wonders whether Thomas Tuchel would want to replace Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford in the England national team once he takes charge.
The 30-year-old started for the Three Lions in their 3-0 victory against Greece in the Nations League on 14 November, and the goalkeeper pulled off some impressive saves to deny the hosts.
Pickford had been the first choice between the sticks under Gareth Southgate and has been trusted by Lee Carsley, although the interim boss will soon relinquish his duties with the senior squad.
With Tuchel set to become the new manager at the turn of the year, speaking on The Guardian’s Football Weekly Podcast [15 November], Fadugba suggested that the German could axe Pickford from the starting lineup.
“I wonder from Tuchel’s point of view what he’ll do with Pickford. I wonder if that’s going to be a Joe Hart, Pep vibes. Maybe he is going to try something different. I wonder, from Pickfrod’s point of view, how he’ll interpret that or if he’ll be able to keep his place,” he said.
“I think that’s one of the areas I would imagine if Tuchel were to start looking at how I can tweak this team. He may come for Pickford. He’s never really been challenged under Southgate.”
Jordan Pickford has proved himself for Everton and England
Pickford has been one of Everton’s best players since his move from Sunderland in 2017, and the goalkeeper has unarguably fulfilled his potential at the club.
While the shot-stopper might be missing silverware from his cabinet, that’s down to the Toffees prospects as a team and doesn’t reflect fairly on how good the Englishman has been individually.
With the Blues fighting relegation over the last few seasons, the 30-year-old has been a rare bright spark in a rather tough period at Goodison.
Pickford has made some clutch saves over the years to save Everton from being relegated to the Championship and is once again proving instrumental under Sean Dyche in the current campaign.
The Toffees goalkeeper has been a regular in between the sticks for England since the 2018 World Cup, and the national side have enjoyed much success with the 30-year-old, reaching several semi-finals and finals over the years.
Pickford has enjoyed the managers’ confidence with the Three Lions because he’s the best of the bunch, and it would be baffling for Tuchel to change it up.
In other Everton news, Ruud van Nistelrooy has been mooted to replace Dyche.
