Alasdair Lamont believes James Tavernier has now “lost all confidence” at Rangers after his recent performances.
The defender has been hammered by fans and pundits alike this season due to the poor form and lack of fight he’s shown when called upon by the Gers.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (6 November), BBC journalist Lamont shared why he thinks time is running out for the Englishman.
“Philippe Clement was full of praise for the mentality his players showed to overturn the half-time deficit, which was fair enough, but the bigger issue concerns how they found themselves in that position in the first place,” he wrote.
“A first-half showing devoid of a clear plan and lacking in guile, precision, determination and quality.
“James Tavernier’s positives have always, in my view, outweighed his negatives, but he now appears to have lost all confidence, affecting his touch, choices and ability to influence a game in the manner he used to and the captain’s downturn has filtered throughout the team”.
James Tavernier time is now up at Rangers
As Tavernier is now 33 years old, it’s evident that the Englishman is entering the twilight stages of his career.
The defender has been a stalwart at Ibrox since his arrival and has helped captain the Gers to many incredible nights of football.
While reflecting on the past and remembering how good the right-back was a few years ago is all well and good, that doesn’t excuse the poor form he’s been in since the start of the term.
It feels like his legs have gone and although there’s still a stellar set-piece taker within the defender, that doesn’t warrant enough for Clement to continue starting him each week.
The Belgian has been under the magnifying glass himself since the start of the term and if things don’t change, it could cost him his job.
While the 2024/25 season may end up being bittersweet for the former Wigan Athletic man, nothing can take away the impact he’s had on the club since his arrival all those years ago.
In other Rangers news, Stevie Clifford discussed a moment against Motherwell which made up his mind about one Gers player.
