Billy Dodds believes the only thing Philippe Clement can do to win the support of Rangers fans back is to beat Celtic in the Scottish League Cup Final in December.
The Gers have crumbled in high-pressure games this season as they’ve already lost to the Bhoys and fellow title rivals Aberdeen, which resulted in a lot more scrutiny heading Clement’s way.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland in quotes relayed by BBC Sport (5 November), Dodds shared his thoughts on how beating Celtic could help secure the 50-year-old’s future.
“That’s [beating Celtic] the kind of thing that’s going to have to happen if they’re going to turn around a fair percentage of the fans,” he said.
“It’s going to take results ticking along before that final and then going on to win it for something astronomical to happen – like the fans to really buy back into it because they are on the edge.
“You heard them, everybody who was there or even listening to TV or radio, heard the reaction [against Motherwell]. It was borderline toxic. To turn that around is going to need a massive result, and it’s going to take a cup final win against Celtic to achieve that.
“It’s going to take that sort of result to help Philippe Clement’s fortunes”.
Vaclav Cerny could be key to saving Philippe Clement’s Rangers job
The arrival of Vaclav Cerny to Ibrox in the summer was initially frowned upon by some due to the Czechia international’s poor injury history.
While he has been sidelined on the odd occasion, the winger has quickly become one of the most important figures in the Belgian’s set-up.
His recent form has been a sight to behold with the Wolfsburg loanee often being the sole reason behind the Gers getting any points.
Clement’s future has been under plenty of scrutiny since the start of the season and while he’s still just about holding on, there’s going to come a time when John Gilligan decides enough is enough and will have to get rid of the Belgian.
But, if Cerny can perform against Olympiacos on 7 November as he did against St Mirren, the winger could be the cause of Clement staying at the helm.
Only time will tell what the future has in store for Rangers in the Europa League but anything less than a win, could prove fatal for Clement.
