Former Premier League official Keith Hackett has urged Howard Webb to visit Leeds boss Daniel Farke after his recent fourth official bust-up.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief, ex-FIFA, and Premier League referee made it clear that it is part of the sport to “be able to question or seek guidance on a decision.”
Farke claimed he was within his rights to ask questions of the fourth official during Leeds’ 1-0 loss against Preston on Saturday (14 December) regarding how Ben Whiteman avoided a red card.
However, the situation infuriated the Preston staff which culminated in an argument that saw Farke yellow carded for the third time this season.
Howard Webb should speak with the Leeds boss to improve relationships
Hackett told Football Insider, “Part of football is an ability to be able to question or seek guidance on a decision.
“That’s happened forever since we had the technical area and fourth officials, there’s a communication.
“It’s about how you approach the fourth official, how many times you do it, that’s the scenario.
“This guy doesn’t seem like a guy who shouts his mouth off, he gives me that impression that he’s approaching in a reasonable manner.
“Fourth officials have got to not overreact, they’ve got to take a bit of the heat and get on with it rather than trying to find a problem where a manager gets a yellow card.
“What I would suggest is this, Howard Webb as the boss of the PGMOL should visit the manager.
“Within that locality, there is a referee coach, and joined with that coach let’s try and talk through what is the basic problem and determine a sensible approach in how a manager wants to question a decision.
“It frankly doesn’t look that public, it’s not someone throwing a bottle or kicking the bucket or prancing down the touchline.
“It all seems a bit, the words rather than the action, therefore what is acceptable and what’s not?
“Try and improve the relationship.”
