'Maguire to take massive pay cut to stay at Man United': 'Crazy' fan reaction

Harry Maguire should take a significant pay cut if he is to extend his contract with Man United because the wage bill is already “crazy”, according to fans.

The centre-back returned to the starting lineup for Ruben Amorim’s side in their 2-1 win over local rivals Man City on Sunday (15 December), producing a solid defensive performance.

Speaking after the game, the 31-year-old revealed [Daily Mail] he has held “positive” talks with the Red Devils over a new deal to extend his stay at the club.

While it seems many Man United fans would be happy enough for that to happen, there is a caveat to that for many when it comes to his wages.

As things stand, Maguire’s contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of this season, although there is an option to extend that by a further 12 months.

Now it appears as though a longer-term stay could be on the cards given this latest revelation of talks over a new deal.

Taking to social media to react to those comments, many Man United fans appeared open to the prospect of such an agreement.

Many though did feel that should come with a reduction in his £190,000 per week wages (Daily Mail), which is perhaps not surprising given the recent scrutiny around the club’s cost-cutting and ticket pricing.

Maguire was praised for having “turned it around” under Amorim to be a “very solid option” in the squad, but the “crazy” financial situation had numerous fans pointing to a pay cut as the only viable outcome.

Never really been a fan of his but he’s definitely turned it round ( I think losing the captaincy really helped ) and has been really solid and for a 3rd/4th choice cb I wouldn’t mind keeping him, especially if it means we can be careful with yoro.
