Keith Jackson says Cyriel Dessers is 'Huge' problem after what he was spotted doing at Rangers

Rangers face a “huge problem” with their style of play due to Cyriel Dessers’ erratic performances, according to Keith Jackson.

Writing in the Daily Record (7 October), Jackson noticed Dessers showing “simmering frustration” when he was substituted for Hamza Igamane during the second half of the 2-0 win against St Johnstone on 6 October.

Jackson noted that while Dessers is a hard worker and clearly committed to the cause, his all-round play doesn’t exactly help Philippe Clement.

He said: “That represents a huge problem for the team’s general style of play as, for the most part, it’s the responsibility of the number nine to act as a focal point, to hold the ball up and to link midfield with attack.”

Cyriel Dessers remains under massive pressure at Rangers

For a side who are hoping to fire their way towards the top of the Scottish Premiership table – and catch up with high-flying Celtic and Aberdeen – the lack of number nine options is somewhat alarming.

Dessers is the out-and-out first choice in the number nine role at Ibrox, with fellow 2023 arrival Danilo still making his way back from various injuries and Igamane very much a work in progress.

Igamane’s second-half cameos – usually in place of Dessers – do represent valuable minutes for the 21-year-old Moroccan forward, but there’s still a long way to go before he’s starting regularly up front.

The club’s long-winded pursuit of Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland came to nothing, having reportedly rested on Dessers’ future in Glasgow, and has left Clement with no other credible options.

Scoring seven goals in first first 13 appearances of the new campaign is certainly nothing to be sniffed at, but for the Gers to close the gap, pressure on Dessers will only increase – every single game.

In other Rangers news, one Light Blues star was praised for his honesty post-match after what he did against St Johnstone.
