Keith Jackson believes that John Bennett was the “victim of betrayal” at Rangers.
Bennett was forced to resign from his role due to health concerns late last week which has left the Gers without a permanent Chairman, for now at least.
Jackson believes that although Bennett was the one who took all the blame, he was shafted by what James Bisgrove left behind before his move to Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (16 September, 10:15) Jackson was full of praise for the former Rangers Chairman.
“What he [John Bennett] was doing behind the scenes what a lot of fans won’t see is that he was a far more moderate guy and he was more progressive and was doing the right things,” he said.
“He worked out a figure of about £10million a year wastage in contracts and I don’t mean player contracts and he was eating into that and making progress.
“He was getting the club towards the position that he wanted it to be in, they were in touching distance and then James Bisgrove went to Saudi Arabia and said ‘By the way guys, I’ve left something in my top drawer’ and it’s absolutely shafted them.
“[John Bennett] carried the can, he was the one holding the baby and he took the blame and really I’m not sure it was John Bennett’s fault, he has made mistakes along the way but I think he’s been the victim of betrayal.”
Rangers need to get their future sorted as soon as possible
So far, the 2024/25 season has been fairly tough for Philippe Clement and his men.
The Gers find themselves third in the Scottish Premiership after a bore draw at Hearts and a heavy defeat in the first Old Firm of the season.
This poor form has come after what can be deemed as a fairly lacklustre transfer window that hasn’t made much of an impact on the squad.
Now with Bennett having to resign, yet another thing is hanging heavy over the heads of those involved with the running of Rangers.
If things can be sorted on the pitch and players start to perform as well as Tom Lawrence has recently, there would be at least one item ticked off the long list of things that need to be sorted at Ibrox.
It’s still early days in the season but it feels like the further we get into the campaign, the worse it seems to get for the Gers.
Clement needs to find a way to turn things around otherwise the pressure upon his head could increase and perhaps even cost him his job.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have been told to avoid allowing Dave King back into the Gers’ boardroom.
