Keith Jackson says senior Rangers figure deserves 'Standing ovation' after what he has done

John Gilligan can’t be blamed for the “shambles” Rangers find themselves in, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist believes the interim chairman of the Gers deserves a standing ovation for how he’s handled the crisis at Ibrox.

Gilligan took over temporarily after John Bennett stepped down earlier this year, and the Light Blues have since continued their search for a permanent chairman.

Speaking on Hotline Live [3 December], Jackson said: “John Gilligan, in his 70s, has been shoehorned into a crisis situation and has been doing nothing but trying to hold everything together. Refresh the boardroom, find appointments.

“I don’t think anybody can rightfully point an accusatory finger at John Gilligan. He’s been left facing an absolute shambles. And he’s tried to do whatever he can at his late stage in life to hold it all together.

“I think he deserves a standing ovation.”

Rangers deteriorating under John Gilligan

While it’s true that Gilligan didn’t arrive in the boardroom in the best of circumstances, the 72-year-old hasn’t convinced many with how the Bears have been run in recent months.

Philippe Clement’s continuity, despite the poor results, shows a lack of leadership at the helm.

The Glaswegian outfit disclosed a loss of £17.2million in their recent accounts, and the hierarchy could be forgiven for not having the funds to part ways with the Belgian.

But Nils Koppen’s promotion to technical director at Rangers felt a bit haphazard, as he hasn’t had experience in such a position with a relative lack of success in his old role too.

Koppen was a scout at PSV Eindhoven before joining the Light Blues as the head of football recruitment in January 2024.

The Bears are having a tough time on the pitch as well, sitting well behind Celtic in the league table, and the poor results on the pitch are a reflection of how things have been off it.

Malcolm Offord was expected to be named the new chairman but is now out of the running [Daily Record, 3 December].

The Gers’ upcoming AGM on 5 December will offer fascinating insights into what Gilligan has managed to do since taking charge as the interim.

In other Rangers news, Clement could be sacked if things don’t go his way in the next few weeks.
