Keith Wyness: Chelsea will get green light to build mega-money new stadium

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed Chelsea plans to build a big-money new stadium in Earl’s Court.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the project “makes sense” as upgrading Stamford Bridge is “too difficult to do”.

As reported by The Guardian (10 September), Chelsea have held talks over a potential move to Earl’s Court with expanding capacity a big priority for the club’s owners.

It is claimed discussions have been held with Transport for London, one of the partners that looks after the Earl’s Court site, and real estate developer Delancey.

Stamford Bridge currently holds 40,343 fans, leading to fears that Chelsea are falling behind the likes of rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.

Chelsea plans for Earl’s Court stadium build ‘make sense’, says Wyness

Wyness insisted a new stadium build won’t be cheap but is the right decision for the Blues.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t see any problem with Chelsea and an infrastructure project like a stadium.

“There’ll be a queue of people waiting to do that.

“Certainly, Todd Boehly or Clearlake – who aren’t one big happy family at the moment – would have the access to make a major project like this happen.

“Earl’s Court has been talked about for many years as a location and it makes sense.

“But with that location, it ain’t gonna be cheap – that’s for sure.

“The upset of traffic and for residents will be huge.

“But upgrading Stamford Bridge is just too difficult to do.”
