'Huge' - Keith Wyness shares Liverpool takeover verdict as Saudi talks held

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Liverpool are unlikely to see investment from Saudi Arabia despite John Henry’s involvement with the country’s Private Investment Fund (PIF).

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed PIF’s involvement with Newcastle would mean investing in the Reds is a “huge conflict”.

According to ESPN (10 September) the owner of Liverpool’s parent company Fenway Sports Group, John Henry, has joined forces with PIF to broker the merger of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

Talks were held in New York last week over a $1 billion injection into the PGA Tour from Saudi Arabia.

Henry added to his sporting portfolio by entering the world of golf earlier this year, leading a massive $3billion group investment in the PGA Tour.

The US investor also own baseball’s Boston Red Sox and ice hockey’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

Liverpool not set for Saudi takeover despite Henry talks, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Liverpool are unlikely to benefit from Henry’s links with Saudi Arabia, who have made a huge play in football in recent years and will host the World Cup in 2034.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is a rumour I’m yet to see any real proof about.

“I don’t know how it would work with Newcastle and PIF being the owners there, it would be a huge conflict.

“We know they got the Newcastle deal through as PIF claimed not to be the Saudi Arabian state – I’m still questioning that.

“I just don’t see a way around the link with Newcastle, and I’m yet to see the Saudi interest confirmed through any accurate sources.”
