Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed his old side could be looking to cash in on the value of their new sponsorship deals to ease cashflow concerns.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted he hopes new debt taken on by the Toffees will be part of a “package” which finally sees the club change hands.
According to trusted insider The Esk (9 September), Everton are set to announce more “bizarre” short-term extended debt funding arrangements.
The Merseysiders have recently brought on more sponsors, including Red Bull and Aramark.
Everton’s debt is widely reported to stand at more than £600million and has put off investors from purchasing the club.
However, John Textor has agreed a period of exclusivity with Farhad Moshiri and is working on completing a full takeover.
Everton could be cashing in on new sponsorships as takeover edges closer, says Wyness
Wyness claimed the recent news on sponsors and debt could be part of a solution to move the deal forward.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There have been a lot of recent sponsorship deals.
“The way that most clubs work now is that these sponsorships are factored forward, and that could be one of the things Everton are looking at.
“The debt-funding could be one of the present borrowers increasing their limit, but The Esk has been very mysterious in his writings about this – so let’s wait for more details.
“Hopefully, this will be news that is part of a package to move to ownership situation forward.”
