Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Toffees fans should direct their anger at the Premier League after Leicester avoided a points deduction.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested fans will be upset that the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) have not been drafted “professionally”.
Leicester had been charged with a breach of the Premier League’s PSR for the 2022-23 campaign after reporting losses of £89.7million – with top-flight clubs only permitted to lose £105million over three years.
The Foxes argued they were no longer a Premier League club when they submitted their accounts on 30 June 2023 – following relegation to the Championship.
An independent commission initially rejected those claims, but in a significant twist, Leicester confirmed in a statement (3 September) that their appeal against that ruling has been successful.
Everton and Nottingham Forest were deducted nine and four points respectively for PSR breaches in the 2023-24 campaign.
Everton and Nottingham Forest fans should ‘direct anger at Premier League’ over Leicester gaffe, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Here we are back talking about PSR again.
“The ‘S’ does stand for sustainability but that’s not really what’s happening here with these rules.
“I think the fans have got to be angry with the Premier League for their drafting of these rules, which have allowed Leicester to run the coach and horses straight through them.
“I presumed the rules had been written up professionally, but they haven’t.
“If there’s any anger at all from Everton or Forest fans, it should be directed towards the Premier League more than anyone else.”
