Leeds United are in desperate need of a striker but should be wary of making a January offer for Sunderland star Eliezer Mayenda.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes Leeds United would ‘romp’ the Championship if they had a 20-goal-a-season striker and admits the 19-year-old would have to ‘step up’ if he made the move to Elland Road.

Daniel Farke’s side have turned things around after a frustrating start to the season, securing two consecutive 2-0 wins against fellow Yorkshire sides Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City.

Mayenda’s Sunderland currently sit at the summit of the Championship table having won all of their opening four games, scoring ten goals.

Leeds United should make Eliezer Mayenda move

The Spanish striker has been a surprise package for Sunderland, scoring twice and providing two assists since his return from an unsuccessful loan at Scottish side Hibernian.

Mayenda played just 57 Scottish Premier League minutes during his three-month spell with the Edinburgh club, failing to make a single goal contribution.

“He’s not a bad player but can he make it in the big leagues?” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“The Championship is a big league but I don’t know, I think they might need better than that.

“The boy might go ‘bang’ and step it up, but playing at Hibernian is nowhere near the pressure of playing at Leeds.

“I don’t know the boy, I don’t know his character so I don’t know if he can step it up.

“If Leeds get a striker that can get 20 goals they’ll romp it.

“From what I’m hearing at Leeds, everyone is raving about the way they’re playing, they’re playing great football, great to watch, free scoring but they should be scoring a lot more.

“They need midfield players to chip in with goals until they get a number nine but everyone wants a striker.

“People think it’s easy to go and get a striker but it’s not, someone scoring goals at one club might not be able to do it at another club.

“Unless he can make the step up, there is no point in taking him.”
