Keith Wyness: Everton told to complete midfielder deal after talks open

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted a new contract for James Garner is “absolutely crucial” for the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed “stability” is the order of the day on Merseyside with the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium set to give the club a boost in 2025.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (5 June) that Everton are confident of tying midfield star Garner down to a new contract after opening talks.

The Toffees have opened talks with the 23-year-old, who has been monitored by Tottenham and Newcastle.

Everton have already handed Idrissa Gueye a one-year extension, while contract offers have also been extended to Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman.

The club have also confirmed they will hold talks with Leeds about keeping Jack Harrison at Goodison Park after his successful loan in the 2023-24 campaign.

Dyche told to keep Everton squad together as Wyness braces for another relegation battle

Wyness urged Sean Dyche and his transfer chiefs to keep his current crop of players together.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Contracts for players like Garner are absolutely crucial.

“I’m a big believer in stability and the more of this squad they can keep, the better.

“The squad have shown they can bond together, and that is hugely important for this last push to stay in the Premier League at Goodison Park.

“Not everything will be solved by the new stadium, but the budgets are going to look much healthier and the cavalry could be coming at some stage.

“Keep the squad together, add one or two players, and focus on this season.”

In other news, Everton, West Ham and Crystal Palace race to sign midfield star.
