Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group will be disappointed after pulling out of a deal to buy Bordeaux.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the former Champions League outfit represented “exceptional value” for the US investors.
FSG had been in talks to buy French club Bordeaux but it has recently emerged the Boston-based firm has pulled out of the negotiations.
A statement (16 July) revealed FSG cited future maintenance costs of the stadium, plus the general uncertainty over the financial stability of football in the country as their biggest concerns.
Bordeaux have subsequently been relegated to the Championnat National for the 2024-25 campaign, the third tier of French football.
Liverpool & FSG unlikely to continue takeover search after Bordeaux collapse, says Wyness
Liverpool owners FSG, who count basketball great LeBron James as an investor, also own MLB franchise Boston Red Sox and NHL side Pittsburgh Penguins.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I thought it was a great deal for Liverpool, and it is a great deal.
“I don’t expect Liverpool and FSG to be looking around at other clubs after the collapse.
“Bordeaux had many boxes which were ticked, and I’m sorry to see it fall through.
“I thought it would’ve been a good match for Liverpool.
“They’ll be keeping an eye out but they want something with exceptional value, and I felt Bordeaux presented that exceptional value.
“They’re now back to a watching brief.
“FSG want certain quality, certain leagues, and certain financial boxes to be ticked.
“Unless we see another opportunity like Bordeaux, we won’t see them in talks again for a while.”
In other news, Liverpool told £25million defender bid will be accepted.
