Keith Wyness: Man City rivals 'upset' after secret 115 charges development

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted rivals of Man City have a right to be “upset” about a lack of transparency in their 115 charges hearing.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed City’s rivals are “paying the bill” for the case and will be worried about if their money is being well-spent.

Man City and the Premier League started their face-off in secret in central London last week (16 September), with the hearing expected to go on for around 10 weeks.

The case is the result of a four-year investigation into City’s financial conduct stretching back to 2008.

They are accused of breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) on seven occasions – as well as failing to provide accurate financial information.

City strongly deny all charges and insist their case is supported by a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence”.

Man City rivals ‘upset’ about lack of transparency in 115 charges case, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I can understand if the other clubs are upset.

“If you’re paying the bill, you have a right to see what’s going on.

“This will be deducted from the overall broadcasting share, so if it’s £20million in legal fees – that’s a million from each club.

“But due to legal proceedings being as they are, they’ve decided it will be held in secret.

“Clubs have every right to be upset because they don’t know if their money is being well-spent.

“You don’t know if the Premier League have hired the wrong lawyers, or have spent too much on lawyers.

“In the recent Everton case, the Premier League had their knuckles wrapped because they spent five times more on expert witnesses than Everton.

“There is a case that if you’re spending someone else’s money, you’re not quite as careful.

“With the Premier League having a blank cheque, there’s not much accountability.

“Yes, there is a reason to be angry and question it – but the reality is that the clubs aren’t going to have much say.”
