'This Is Huge' - Keith Wyness: Chelsea face 'unique' hurdle after 'huge' talks open

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the Chelsea Pitch Owners are a “unique” hurdle to clear if the club is to move away from Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the non-profit organisation will have a “major say” in where the club’s future lies.

Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO) owns both the freehold of Stamford Bridge and the naming rights of Chelsea FC.

The name is leased on the condition that the Blues continue to play their home games at Stamford Bridge – which has been the club’s home since its formation – unless CPO members agree to move.

As reported by The Guardian (10 September), Chelsea have held talks over a potential move to Earl’s Court – with expanding capacity a big priority for the club’s owners.

Chelsea Pitch Owners are ‘unique’ hurdle for Boehly and co, says Wyness

Wyness has previously told Football Insider (22 September) that Chelsea will find it “very tough” to redevelop their Stamford Bridge home.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The unique piece of this puzzle is a group called the Chelsea Pitch Owners.

“They have a major say in whether the club will move or redevelop Stamford Bridge.

“That’s a key factor that no other club seems to have.

“Earl’s Court – there’d be no problems funding that move, but we’ll have to see how it plays out with the Chelsea Pitch Owners.

“It’s a huge project, but Stamford Bridge would be just as difficult to renovate.”
