Keith Wyness: Wolves takeover deal could hit the rocks after new development

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the poor start to the 2024-25 campaign at Wolves will put potential investors off.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs and their boardrooms – insisted the “dreaded fear of relegation is the one thing” which could prevent new money coming in at Molineux.

Wyness has previously revealed to Football Insider (24 October) that he expects a US investor to launch a minority investment at Wolves “very soon”.

In an interview with The Telegraph on 27 September, chairman Jeff Shi revealed the club have spoken with groups about a minority investment and there has been plenty of interest.

But after a recent spell of poor form, Wolves are sitting second-from-bottom in the Premier League – picking up just two points from a possible 27 in their opening nine games.

Gary O’Neil’s side made a spirited comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away at Brighton on Saturday (26 October).

Wolves form will put potential investors off, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Any club looking to bring in new investment will want to show stability.

“So that will help O’Neil.

“Of course, he’s got to win games and get points on the board – but I think he will.

“A successful Wolves and Gary O’Neil turning things around will attract that investment in.

“The dreaded fear of relegation is the one thing that will put an investor off.

“I think they’ll turn it around because the squad are still playing well for him.”
