Paul Robinson has given special praise to James Maddison following his starring role as Tottenham beat Manchester City 4-0 on Saturday.
The 28-year-old has struggled so far this season, even being benched in three of the last four matches in all competitions, but was quick off the mark at the Etihad on 23 November.
Occupying the No.10 role behind Son Heung-min, Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski, Maddison opened to scoring before bagging his brace, with Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson joining in on the party.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “Players are going to come in and out of the side. Maddison had a little bit of a dip in form, came back in for the Europa League games, and the system changed which is why he came back in versus Man City.
“It was a big call for Ange Postecoglou to leave Brennan Johnson out of the team. He played Sarr and Bissouma as the holding midfielders, Kulusevski on the right, Son on the left and Maddison in the No.10 role.
“That’s where he’s the most effective. We saw him playing there last season and he looked like a kid in the park enjoying his football again. He looked carefree and full of confidence in the way he took both goals.
“That time out of the team may have helped him to refocus. When Postecoglou plays players in their best positions, there’s no surprise that you get the best out of them.”
James Maddison back to his best after Tottenham win v Manchester City?
Despite notching five goals and three assists in the Premier League this term, he has often been outshone by his attacking teammates, especially Dejan Kulusevski.
The Swede added another goal contribution to his name at the Etihad Stadium and is still topping the list for most chances created in the Premier League [FotMob].
With AS Roma up next in the Europa League, it will be interesting to see whether Maddison gets the nod.
