Kieran Maguire: Ratcliffe could now trigger 'Nuclear' Man United deal

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will have to consider building a new stadium because the Glazers have taken too many “shortcuts” as Man United owners.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that building a new stadium would be a “nuclear” option for Ratcliffe and the Red Devils.

The faults of Old Trafford were on show after their 1-0 loss to Arsenal last week with the 74,000-capacity stadium leaking and flooding under heavy rainfall.

Ratcliffe has publicly expressed his desire to build a new “Wembley of the North” as United owner with talks ongoing over the potential project.

The alternative option is to refurbish Old Trafford, although doing so could force the club to relocate elsewhere during construction work.

Football Insider was told by former Everton CEO Keith Wyness that United could play at Goodison Park if they are forced to temporarily relocate for stadium refurbishment.

Man United must consider ‘nuclear’ stadium option

Maguire blamed the Glazers for their “derelict” care of Old Trafford which has left Ratcliffe with no option but to consider stadium plans.

The Glazer family have been derelict in their duties of care towards Old Trafford,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

What we saw in the match against Arsenal is indicative of what happens when you fail to maintain your property assets.

The Glazers have been looking for shortcuts and workarounds to avoid putting money into the club.

Project Big Picture and the Super League would have given the Glazers funds to work on the stadium but those options are now off the table.

So you can understand why Jim Ratcliffe is now having to consider all options including the nuclear option for a new stadium.

Although, I hope he doesn’t use the same architects used for the Manchester Coop Arena.
