King expects Ange to have words with Tottenham star after what he did v Brentford

Bryan King expects Ange Postecoglou to have words with James Maddison after the Tottenham midfielder’s celebration against Brentford.

The ex-Spurs scout doesn’t understand why the 27-year-old took his shirt off during his celebrations.

Maddison scored his first goal of the season in a 3-1 win over Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (21 September).

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – was left bemused by the Englishman’s celebration.

“It was a quality finish from Maddison,” King said.

“However, what was him taking his shirt off in the celebrations all about? Where does that come from?

“It meant that he picked up a cheap yellow card. It looked like he was making a statement by removing the shirt. However, I was always led to believe that when you’re playing with the shirt, you’re representing the club.

“What is the point of taking it off and throwing it in the air? A lot of people regard that as disrespectful. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that. However, it doesn’t need to be done.

“He made his point by scoring a very good goal. I’d have understood if he had a t-shirt underneath with a message on it, but he was wearing a plain vest.

“I’d imagine someone will say something about that, perhaps Postecoglou. The last thing a sponsor would want to see is the shirt lying in a crumpled heap. How much more effective would his celebration have been if he had the Tottenham shirt on.”

James Maddison back among the goals for Tottenham against Brentford

Maddison has been far from his best this season, with his recent performances being blasted by King. Therefore, he would have been both delighted and relieved to get off the mark for the season.

However, Postecoglou would have no doubt been frustrated to see the playmaker pick up an unnecessary yellow card.

He will likely be forgiven after helping Tottenham to claim a crucial three points. However, Postecoglou can’t afford to lose any players in a jam-packed schedule, and won’t want to see too many more bookings flying around.
