Bryan King doesn’t think Tottenham should sign German forward Timo Werner permanently.
The ex-Spurs scout claims he wasn’t a fan of Werner or Kai Havertz when they arrived in the Premier League at Chelsea.
However, Havertz has since pushed on and become a key player under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.
Meanwhile, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Werner has done the complete opposite.
“I don’t see what Werner would bring to the team if he was signed permanently,” King said.
“We’re starting to see why his value has gone down because his performance levels have dropped dramatically.
“I didn’t fancy Havertz or Werner when they joined Chelsea. However, Havertz has stepped up at Arsenal. Werner certainly hasn’t stepped up, and he was arguably a bigger name when he joined Chelsea than Havertz was.
“Werner should be pushing Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson or Dejan Kulusevski for their places, but he isn’t. He looks like a very ordinary player.”
Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou to avoid signing Timo Werner?
According to Give Me Sport (28 October), Spurs will not sign Werner from RB Leipzig permanently at the end of the season, with Ange Postecoglou seeking an upgrade.
Since the news emerged, Werner has opened his account for the season, scoring in the 2-1 fourth-round Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (30 October).
However, he will likely have to do much more than that to convince Spurs to sign him permanently, especially with some similar failings emerging against City, despite the German scoring.
Postecoglou will likely want to see the 28-year-old produce consistently if he is to even consider signing him.
Therefore, while that goal against City was a good start, Werner still has a long way to go to earn a permanent deal in North London.
In other Tottenham news, Juventus want to sign one player from the club on loan in January.
