Tottenham are now frontrunners to sign Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher this summer after new developments at Aston Villa, according to Alan Hutton.

Spurs and Villa are understood to be interested in the England international with the race for the midfielder set to ramp up following the disappointing conclusion of Euro 2024 [Football London, 17 July].

Ange Postecoglou has already added to his midfield options with the signing of Archie Gray, while Unai Emery is closing in on Everton star Amadou Onana who is set to join the ranks at Villa Park [Fabrizio Romano, 18 July].

Although Hutton believes Spurs and Chelsea will have to meet in the middle to agree a fee for Gallagher this summer, he doesn’t believe Villa will be involved in talks now that they have already signed Onana.

“I think he makes Tottenham better,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He would give them a different option. Do I think they could get him for £30million? Probably not, I think Chelsea value him at £50million.

“Could they meet somewhere in the middle? I think they’d be getting an excellent player with experience who was the captain at Chelsea last season and he definitely makes them stronger in the middle of the pitch.

“I think he would flourish under Ange Postecoglou with what he’s trying to do at that club so it’s going to be an interesting one.

“Now that Villa, who I know were interested in him, are going for Amadou Onana, that will probably be dead in the water and that almost leaves Spurs to go and chase after him.

“I’ve got a feeling he will leave. I didn’t at the start, but I feel that the longer this goes on that he will move somewhere.”

Will Tottenham sign Conor Gallagher in the transfer window amid Chelsea exit speculation?

Spurs have been in the race for Gallagher for a while now, with speculation linking the England international with a move to North London in the last couple of transfer windows.

As Hutton suggests, the 24-year-old would offer a different dimension to Postecoglou’s midfield alongside the likes of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur with his tireless energy and immense workrate.

Whether or not the Lilywhites would be willing to match the Blues’ valuation of the midfielder remains to be seen, but with only a year left on his deal at Stamford Bridge, there will likely be some room for negotiation.

Hopefully, no further interest in Gallagher will arise in the coming weeks as that seems to be the only thing that could stop Spurs from getting their man this summer.
