Bryan King has urged Tottenham to offer Son Heung-min a fresh two-year contract at the club.
The ex-Spurs scout doesn’t understand why the North London side wouldn’t want to extend the 32-year-old’s stay.
As previously reported by the Telegraph (4 November), Tottenham plan to trigger a one-year option in Son’s contract, which would keep him at the club until June 2026
However, TBR Football has reported (8 November) that the forward’s entourage are not happy with the club’s decision to take up their one-year option, rather than offer Son a new contract.
As a result, the Saudi Pro League have taken notice, with Son emerging as a transfer target ahead of next summer.
And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes this must be addressed in North London.
“The only way to quell talk of him leaving is by giving him a two-year contract,” King said.
“I don’t understand why there would be any problem with Tottenham unless his wages are proving to be a stumbling block.
“However, if you’ve got a player of that experience and that calibre, two years isn’t going to hurt your football club. Especially not when you see what some other players, who have only given a third of what Son has given to the club, are earning.
“He might be used more on the bench beyond next season. However, he is still an influence.
“He could be used to work alongside the coaches with some of the young front players.”
Tottenham to offer Son Heung-min new contract amid interest from the Saudi Pro League?
Losing Son next summer would be a big blow for Tottenham.
Therefore, they might be left with no choice but to offer the 32-year-old a new deal. Should they take up their one-year option, that doesn’t guarantee Son will remain with the club.
If a Saudi Pro League side were to make an enticing offer next summer, the South Korea international might push for the transfer, especially if his entourage are unhappy with Spurs.
That would be a real blow to Ange Postecoglou.
Therefore, if the club want to keep hold of Son beyond next year and keep him happy, they might have to bite the bullet and offer him a new deal.
After all, it is the least he deserves after everything he has given to the club.
