Bryan King has urged Tottenham to sign Ivan Toney instead of Dominic Solanke amid a £65million transfer update.

The ex-Spurs scout claims that the North London club need a new number nine.

It comes after The Athletic reported (9 June) that a release clause in Solanke’s contract means the Bournemouth frontman is available for £65million, but only to certain teams.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that money would be better spent elsewhere.

“Tottenham need a centre-forward, Richarlison is the only one,” King said.

“They have played Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski through the middle. They’ve been crying out for a new number nine since Harry Kane left.

“I think Ivan Toney would be the man for Tottenham to sign. Perhaps they would be better off putting any money for Solanke toward Toney instead, he only has a year left on his contract.

“He is certainly one to look at.”

Should Tottenham sign Dominic Solanke or Ivan Toney?

Richarlison has so far struggled to prove that he is the long-term replacement for Harry Kane.

In all fairness, filling the boots of Spurs’ record goalscorer is not an easy task, but multiple injury issues last season demonstrated that Richarlison cannot be relied upon.

Solanke and Toney are both big-name strikers with proven track records in the Premier League. However, Tottenham must be wary about which player they sign.

Either option is likely to cost big money and it is important for the club, Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou that they get this decision right.

Toney has just one year remaining on his contract, is slightly older than Solanke, and looks likely to leave Brentford.

As a result, he could be slightly cheaper and is perhaps a more worthwhile investment.

In other Tottenham news, it is only a matter of time before one player leaves the club permanently.
