Expert suggests int'l boss has agenda against 'extremely frustrated' Tottenham star

John Wenham believes Gareth Southgate has an agenda against Tottenham midfielder James Maddison.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose was surprised that the 27-year-old was not included in the England squad for the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

Maddison was included in Southgate’s provisional squad for the tournament but missed out on the final 26-man selection of players who will represent the Three Lions this summer in Germany.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – claims the midfielder’s omission points to a deeper-rooted issue.

“I did think it was a bit harsh to leave Maddison out,” Wenham said.

“But this all goes back to a bigger issue. I remember when Maddison played for Leicester, Southgate didn’t like him and would never pick him.

“There were times when he looked ready to feature but was completely overlooked.

“I’m sure Maddison will feel extremely frustrated and disappointed.”

There is no getting away from Maddison’s disappointing form over the past few months.

Since returning from injury in January the midfielder has looked a shadow of his former self. He started his Tottenham career on fire, but those flames have certainly now fizzled out.

However, there is no denying that on his day Maddison can decide football matches.

Therefore, while Southgate would have based his decision on recent form, with 26 spots available to him perhaps it might have been worth taking a gamble on Maddison.

However, he chose not to, and the Spurs ace must ensure he does everything to prove his international manager wrong next season.
