Henry Winter has torn into Everton for a social media post directed at Anthony Gordon following the clash with Newcastle United.
Sean Dyche’s side played out a 0-0 draw with the Magpies on Saturday (5 October) after Jordan Pickford denied former Blues winger Gordon from the penalty sport in the first half.
After the full-time whistle, the Toffees took to social media to post a clip of the winger’s miss with a buzzer sound overlayed and former Times journalist Winter has suggested the Blues should be “better than that”.
Writing in his Substack column on Monday (7 October) he said: “Jordan Pickford drew on his familiarity with Anthony Gordon’s penalty-taking from the attacker’s time at Everton and also on England duty.
“Pickford’s celebration was ecstatic, and rooted in the importance of the save in the game against Newcastle United, possibly in the season.
“There must also have been an element of joy in getting one over on a former team-mate who infuriated Everton fans by leaving for Newcastle in such controversial circumstances.
“Pickford’s celebration was understandable. So was the gloating of the Everton fans angered by Gordon’s exit, and the manner of it, including refusing to train.
“Less understandable was the tweet from the club’s official feed revelling in Gordon’s miss. Everton should really be above that, whatever the emotions still flowing through the corridors of power.
“Leave the tribalism and point-scoring to those on the terraces.”
What happened to Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon at Everton?
It does feel like this entire ‘saga’ has been blown completely out of proportion in the media over the last couple of days.
Winter isn’t the only pundit or journalist to have called out the Toffees for their social media post since the full-time whistle was blown at Goodison Park, with Jamie Carragher also being quick to slam the video.
While there will be some who agree that official club accounts shouldn’t be getting involved in these sorts of incidents, it is part and parcel of the modern footballing world. Whether you agree with it or not, it happens up and down the country, week in and week out.
It isn’t as if Dyche or Kevin Thelwell were the people to hit the post button on the Tweet.
Gordon downed tools when the Toffees needed him a few years ago and while that is now long in the past, football supporters have long memories and Everton are just trying to produce content for their fans.
