Leeds United have been told to sign a new number nine before the transfer window shuts after losing Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson admitted the Whites “lack a number nine.”
The West Yorkshire giants have failed to score in their past two games and have not won any of their three opening fixtures this season.
Leeds United are under pressure to bolster their forward line before deadline day
Brenden Aaronson did open his account with a 95th-minute equaliser against Portsmouth, but Robinson isn’t sure he’s good enough to lead the line.
“He works extremely hard, but he works very, very hard without a purpose at times,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s indisciplined with his defending, I’ve described him as a wasp in a bottle, and that’s what he is a little bit at times.
“They lack a number nine.
“Mateo Joseph played at the weekend, and Patrick Bamford played [against Middlesbrough]; I’d be surprised if his figures were in double figures; he was so ineffective in the game.
“The lack of a number nine was so obvious last night [vs. Middlesbrough], Patrick Bamford hasn’t done it for a couple of seasons now regardless [of] whether it’s injury or lack of form, or not getting in the side.
“Joseph hasn’t done it at that level but he’s the best option they’ve got with the creativity of James, Gnonto, and others.
“They’re going to need to invest, and they’re going to need to invest in a number nine.”
