Leeds United may have to ‘win dirty’ if they want to secure all three points in their pivotal Yorkshire derby against Sheffield United on Friday (October 18).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland striker Frank McAvnnie has backed Daniel Farke’s side to get the win under the lights at Elland Road and admits there are “not many better stadiums” to intimidate opponents.
It’s been a frustrating start to the season for Leeds with four wins, four draws, and one defeat from their opening nine Championship games.
Last time out against league leaders Sunderland, they managed to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory after Illan Meslier’s howler in the 97th minute.
Leeds United need to tap into dark arts vs Sheffield United
Freshly relegated Sheffield United sit in second as the only side left in the Championship who remain unbeaten, winning six and drawing three.
With both sides looking to earn promotion back to the Premier League, this could already be one of the most important games of their respective seasons.
“I think it’ll be a good game”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“If Leeds play the way they can play, they’ll win, I’ll put my neck out and I’m going to say Leeds will win.
“They’ve got decent players, I know they’ve got injuries but I think they’ve got decent players.
“They play football the way it should be played, they try but sometimes they can win dirty and drag out results, I think they’ll get a result.
“Every player will tell you, games under the lights are brilliant, you know, it’s after dark and the lights come on is great.
“Sheffield are a big club and they’re not far apart, it’s not a derby but there will be no love lost.
“With the crowd behind them, there’s not many better stadiums than Elland Road when it’s rocking.”
