Philippe Clement’s recent Q&A session with Rangers fans at Ibrox was akin to a Donald Trump interview, according to Michael Gannon.
On page 69 of the Sunday Mail’s print edition [15 September], Gannon said the Gers manager would have dreaded the meeting with supporters at Edmiston House during the week but that the questions levelled at him were always going to be vetted.
Clement’s side head into Sunday afternoon’s visit to Dundee United eight points behind both Celtic and Aberdeen in what is already considered to be a must-win.
Gannon explained: “Clement would have had the date circled in his calendar along with other dreaded appointments, like root canal treatment and a colonic. Yet the Rangers manager came through it pretty unscathed.
“Let’s be honest, it was never going to be a Frost v Nixon job. These events never are. It’s more like a Donald Trump interview on Fox News, with questions heavily vetted. Even the ones that got through were never going to be stingers.
“It’s the same when it comes to AGMs, pretty much for every club.”
Rangers and Philippe Clement need results fast
Rangers are in a potentially dire situation already should they fail to beat Dundee United.
Lose or draw at Tannadice and the Light Blues will find themselves at least seven points adrift of their bitter rivals just five games into a marathon of a season.
While supporters were never quite going to be given the gauntlet to throw down, Clement is far from daft and knows the mountain that continues to lie ahead of him.
Uncertainty both on and off the pitch and a seemingly incomplete transfer window are weighing the team down, and the trip north for Sunday’s game is set to be unforgiving and a challenge in which Clement’s players will have to roll their sleeves up.
Failure to beat the Tangerines – who will somewhat fancy their chances for a change – and the ire directed at Clement from the stands will far from replicate the Q&A session.
