Liverpool Exclusive: Significant update on forward signing tonight

Liverpool are unlikely to make a move to sign PSV star Johan Bakayoko before 31 August, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Liverpool have been tracking the winger’s progress since last January and have been impressed by his displays.

Sources say PSV will demand a fee of £35million for Bakayoko – an asking price the Reds are not willing to meet this summer due to their well-stocked attacking line.

However, if Mohammed Salah leaves Anfield, whether it happens this year or next year, the club will consider the 21-year-old winger as a possible replacement.

The sale of Fabio Carvalho to Brentford and the imminent exit of Bobby Clark mean Liverpool have money to spend in the transfer market, but they will not rush into any deals.

Liverpool tracking Johan Bakayoko progress after impressive PSV displays

Bakayoko has inspired interest from elite clubs across Europe after his displays for PSV earned him a place in the Belgium squad for Euro 2024.

The winger made 48 appearances for PSV across all competitions last season, picking up 14 goals and 14 assists in what was a major breakthrough season.

His Euro 2024 campaign saw him used just twice, coming off the bench on both occasions as he played just 46 minutes of football as Belgium failed to win against Slovakia and Ukraine.

Liverpool have been monitoring Bakayoko’s progress with a view to making a move, but are already well-stocked up front with Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz as their current options.

As a result, the arrival of a new winger has dropped to the bottom of their list of priorities this summer.

Liverpool are prioritising moves to sign a new deep-lying midfielder and a left-sided centre-back before the window closes on 30 August.

However, the recruitment team is determined to get any incoming deals right, and will not be drawn into deals unless it suits them.
