Alan Hutton drops verdict on Callum McGregor shock - 'good news for Celtic'

Celtic captain Callum McGregor can now focus on his club after announcing his shock retirement from international football.

That’s according to ex-Scotland international Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hutton believes that manager Brendan Rodgers and Celtic will be delighted with the 31-year-old’s decision.

McGregor was a vital part of Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign, playing in each of their three Group A games and providing an assist in their 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

Celtic fans will be hoping to see more of what McGregor did in their 2-0 Scottish Premier League victory over Hibernian now he’s retired from international football.

Callum McGregor now fully focused on Celtic

The legendary midfielder has gone on to make 467 appearances and score 65 goals for his boyhood club since breaking into the first team in 2011.

Celtic have impressed in the early days of the new Scottish Premier League season with two victories, six goals scored, and zero conceded.

“I see it from both side”, Hutton told Football Insider.

“Coming from a fan of the Scotland national team, it will be a huge miss, he’s ever-present and what he does for the team, he’s going to leave a big gaping hole.

“This could be a good opportunity for someone to come in and fill that void.

“He’s 31 now, I thought he’d probably have another season or two within the national team.

“That being said, if you look at the number of games he’s played over his career it’s kind of astonishing, he’s very rarely missing.

“I know he had a couple of little injuries, I think it was an Achilles problem towards the back end of last season but he’s got a lot to give.

“Now it’s brilliant for Celtic moving forward because they know that moving forward he can concentrate on them.

“When international breaks come around he’ll be able to get a rest, he’s looking for that longevity so I’m pretty sure Brendan Rodgers will be happy.”
