Liverpool fans have been left fuming at VAR after Luis Diaz was denied a penalty in their opening Premier League win v Ipswich.

Arne Slot’s side recorded a 2-0 win at Portman Road thanks to goals from Diogo Jota and Mohammed Salah, and it could have been more but for a controversial refereeing call.

Diaz was presented with an opportunity as he flicked the ball over the bar, but was clattered into by goalkeeper Christian Walton after the ball had gone.

The Colombian was joined by the travelling support in his shouts for a penalty, but the goalkeeper went unpunished for his challenge.

Replays showed that Diaz was onside – ruling out one excuse for not awarding the foul – and highlighted the clear collision between the players.

However, neither referee Tim Robinson nor VAR official Stuart Attwell believed the challenge was a foul and stuck with the initial decision.

Controversial VAR decisions were a feature of the last Premier League season and led to a vote amongst clubs over whether to give up on the use of technology.

However, the majority voted in favour of sticking with it, and it has taken just one game for controversy to arise once again for the Reds.

Fans flocked to social media in response to the decision as it was labelled a “blatant penalty” and the referee “diabolical” as they were left fuming at the call.

Diaz was also criticised for missing the chance after no penalty was given, amid suggestions that he was too focused on trying to win a foul rather than scoring.
