Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk sent a video message to cyclist Mark Cavendish after he won BBC Sport’s Lifetime Achievement award.
The BBC Sports Personality Awards took place on 17 December in Salford to mark an incredible 12 months of sporting action.
Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have lifted awards at this ceremony before, winning Team and Coach of the Year back in 2020.
This time, their captain sent a special message to winner Cavendish [BBC Sport], naming him the “true GOAT [Greatest of all Time] in his sport.
He said: “Yes Cav, it’s Virgil here. I just wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate you on winning the BBC Sports Personality Lifetime Achievement Award. It is an incredible achievement, one that I’m sure you’ll be very proud of, and of course, your family will be very proud of too.
“It’s a true reward for the legacy you have created, not just in cycling but across the whole of sport, and is a testament to your simply remarkable career, spending 20 years at the very highest level.
“You have achieved it all. You have won everything there is to win, again and again, and you are the true GOAT of cycling, in my opinion”.
Virgil Van Dijk is at home in Liverpool
Football Insider opinion
There appears to be no obvious prior connection between the Dutchman and the cyclist, as Cavendish has previously admitted to being a Leeds fan.
Despite this, it’s clear that Van Dijk is confident in representing Liverpool in mainstream media. The club remains optimistic that a contract extension will be signed before the January transfer window.
However, Football Insider revealed that the initial offer has been rejected due to disagreements over the contract length.
The 33-year-old has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay on the red side of Merseyside, stating that he “loves the club”. His connection with fellow Dutchman and coach Arne Slot has reignited discussions about him being one of the greatest defenders of all time.
Although the captain wants to stay, it is still uncertain whether he will remain at the club if an agreement cannot be reached. Losing a player of his calibre would be a significant blow for both the team and the club as they navigate this new era under Slot.
In other news, Bournemouth have told Liverpool their transfer stance over their defender.
