Liverpool are expected to step up their interest in Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Virgil van Dijk.
This is according to former Man United, Tottenham and West Ham scout Mick Brown, who remains well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Reds will target a top centre-back if Van Dijk leaves at the end of the season.
Guehi, 24, will have just one year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park in 2025, which has opened up the opportunity for a cut-price deal for his signature.
Newcastle had been heavily linked with a move in the summer and made a £70million bid which was rejected by the Eagles, but there is now a feeling that they could be forced to cash in.
Palace’s valuation was elevated in the summer after losing Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen, but interest has lingered and clubs are keeping close tabs on his progress.
The centre-back has also established himself as a regular fixture in the England side after his performances at Euro 2024, inspiring further interest from top sides.
Meanwhile, Van Dijk’s Liverpool contract is set to expire at the end of the season and talks over an extension have yet to yield a resolution.
Liverpool backed to land Marc Guehi deal after Crystal Palace twist
Football Insider revealed on 27 September that Liverpool remain interested in the defender and could explore a deal worth £40-50million in 2025.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in recruitment at the top level including over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that Guehi could improve their side and expects him to be an option for the club.
“He’s in the England team as their first-choice centre-back,” he told Football Insider.
“That always carries a certain premium, but which top clubs are looking for a centre-back?
“Liverpool are, from what I’ve heard, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a move next summer.
“With the Van Dijk situation there as well, they’re looking at Guehi as a potential replacement.
“If he doesn’t sign a new contract there, they’ll be in desperate need of a top player there and I think Guehi definitely fits that bill.
“His contract situation at Palace is up in the air as well so they won’t be able to demand the sort of money they did in the summer.
“I think Palace have missed out on big money now. Really big money, that is. They’ll still command a big fee for him given how important he is.”
